Preclinical study on Growing Heart Valve Technology published in Cardiovascular Research
Vascudyne announced the publication of pioneering research by Dr. Zeeshan Syedain and Professor Robert Tranquillo in Cardiovascular Research, demonstrating the successful development of biologically engineered valved conduits capable of somatic growth for right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) repair. The study, titled “Biologically engineered valved conduits for right ventricular outflow tract repair evaluated for 52 weeks in growing lambs,” represents a major breakthrough in addressing the critical unmet need for “replacement heart valves that grow with children.”
The groundbreaking research evaluated valved conduits over 52 weeks in growing lambs, showing remarkable growth characteristics including 38% increased diameter and 128% increased collagen content in the inflow segment. The study found that in all three explanted conduits, the leaflets contained interstitial cells, new collagen and elastin primarily around the base, a developing endothelium on the surfaces, and they remained thin and pliable without macroscopic calcification. Importantly, there was interdigitating integration of the conduit with the myocardium at the pulmonary annulus, demonstrating successful biological integration. The study’s conclusion that “this valved conduit grows in lambs based on this pilot study and thus has clinical potential for RVOT reconstruction and long-term valve growth in children” validates Vascudyne’s innovative tissue engineering platform for pediatric cardiac applications, potentially eliminating the need for multiple surgeries as children grow and dramatically improving quality of life for young patients with congenital heart defects.
